点评:My wife and I visited Hopsewee Plantation while visiting Georgetown. Hands down, the best planation or house tour we've ever had. Our guide Yancy, was a wealth of information on building techniques, history, architecture and artifacts. His truthful description of the extraordinary hardships endured by African slaves clearing cypress swamps for rice cultivation was refreshing. The unique topography and 18th century building techniques means that the house has never been flooded, incredible for a three-century old house in the aptly named "South Carolina Lowcountry".
After the tour, we had a "Southern Tea" at the River Cottage. The tea included a variety of delicious savories, a scone (including homemade lemon curd and clotted cream) and three small sweets. We chose Hopsewee blend tea, which had a unique flavor. When the pot ran dry, we were invited to sample a different tea (we chose Buckingham Palace). Our server was delightful, and brought us information on the plantation, including recipes. The setting looks out on the majestic live oaks and the sparkling North Santee River beyond.
Highly recommend.
It is worthwhile to consider another nearby rice plantation, Hampton. Its history is equally fascinating; because it is a state park, admission to Hampton is relatively inexpensive.
Thanks, Yancy, for a memorable tour!
