点评:Keane Wonder Mine is referenced in the NPS maps and signage at Death Valley but isn’t highlighted for some reason. It’s located off one of the roads to Beatty, 3 miles up a bumpy rock and gravel road. A few hundred yards from the parking lot is the base of a mining tram, with intact cables and towers, other wreckage from the old mine strewn around and warnings from the NPS about the dangers of the unstable structures and mining chemicals. At this point, you can turn around and leave after driving a long way to see not much but without much time or effort.
OR, you can walk up one of the trails. Neither trail is marked and if you go left, it dead ends at an outhouse-type structure used for mining (no signage). One group turned around and went back. I scaled a hill, navigated a steep rocky slope and climbed onto the right-fork trail. Neither were good options.
The right fork trail takes you to the first several aerial tram towers and it’s a nice valley view from there. Here, again, you can turn around and go back.
OR, you can climb to the mine. This is an effort. There is barely a trail. It’s mostly rocks. It’s very steeply uphill in multiple sections. There are no trail signs or mileage markers and it’s unclear for a while if there is an end. But after two miles up a rocky trail and 1,500 feet of elevation, you finally get to the top of the tram, a sizable structure with the motor and pulleys still in place. There are also two mine entrances that you can walk into and look into the shafts (they are covered by grates) as well as spectacular views of the tram and the canyon leading to Death Valley. There is no signage up here, and the trails lead a little farther into the canyon and seem to end. Maybe they go farther?
I am not sure why the NPS doesn’t maintain a trail or have signs. Maybe they want to limit the site to people who really want to see it. This was a serious challenge especially considering I wasn’t entirely sure I was on a trail except that I saw a few other people along the way. I think if you make the drive out here, you should plan to do the whole hike to see the mine and tram and view, but just know what it entails.
