点评:After living across the ferry from here for 27 years, I finally decided to take a little day trip to this small-but-mighty museum! It's honestly more expansive than it appears from the outside, with a large room full of shark teeth, another room that functions as a mining diorama, and yet another room full of wall-to-wall historical exhibits, labeled murals, & specimens. Plus, there's a really great gift shop with something for everyone! My boyfriend and I roamed around this place for much longer than expected. I'm a shark nerd and he's really into rocks, so we both found plenty to see!
Don't miss the two shark photo ops, one in a great white's mouth and another in a fossilized jaw. There's also an informational video playing in the mine room, so if you have someone in your party who'd rather sit for a bit, there's something for them, too. :) Truly, this museum reflects so much love for the material within it, down to the last detail.
Be sure to visit on a sunny day so you can dig for shark teeth in the fossil pits across the street! We saw people of all ages there. The fossil pits are quite large, with plenty of space to spread out, though only one of them is shaded by trees (the other is right in the sun, so be aware!). They do close the pits at the same time as the museum and there is a friendly staff member who comes out to remind you when it's nearing that time. We found lots to take home--and I highly recommend spending a few dollars on a shark tooth display frame in the gift shop!
Before you head home, scoot across the street to the Scoop Sloop. There's no listing for it on Tripadvisor at the time of my writing this, but it is a great little shop chock-full of souvenirs, home decor, toys, & more--but most importantly, ice cream! A cold cone makes for a perfect way to end your day of fossil hunting and the park where the pits are offers lots of seating options to enjoy your treat (both a shaded gazebo and picnic tables).
No matter your age, this is such a fun little day trip if you have any interest in fossils, rocks, or shark teeth. The best part--the ferry ride, the fossil pits, and the museum are all free! If you eat lunch before you come, you can get away with only needing money for the gift shop and/or ice cream if you go next door. Don't miss this unassuming yet awesome attraction!
