点评:This was a totally unexpected find, a walk in the woods at the beach! We walked on the Roanoke Trail and had difficulty finding it because we did not go to the information center first. There is a notice up that tells you how to access the various trails but I’ll tell you how we eventually found it.
On Google maps it appears trail 5 (Roanoke) is directly across from trail 4, which is across the street from the parking lot. Trail 5 is not across from 4. You park and walk to the road and turn left. At the stop sign you turn right until you come to the marked trailhead of Roanoke. If you make it to the cemetery you just passed the trailhead!
We walked in the afternoon and it was humid. The trail is dirt covered with pine needles and beware of tree roots, but it is canopied, so that’s pleasant not being in the direct sun while walking.
Your payoff is walking to see the beautiful water expanse at the end on a bit of a boneyard beach. Then you turn around a return to your starting point. We saw a red headed woodpecker and lots of cardinals but none of us thought to bring binoculars which would have helped to see birds better.
