点评：We visited Fern Canyon on a Tuesday in late June, arriving at the parking lot around 9:30 a.m. After a two-hour drive, we were glad we got there early—based on the number of people arriving as we were leaving, it gets busy fast. If I had to do it again, I’d aim to arrive even earlier. At that hour, we shared the canyon with just a handful of other visitors, which made the experience feel extra special.
We had secured a day-before reservation (they release about 100 tickets daily at 9 a.m. PST), and it was surprisingly easy to get. That said, no rangers were present at the station when we arrived—just two giant elk! So we may not have needed the reservation after all, but we were glad to have it just in case. Our backup plan was to enter at 5pm, when the rangers leave for the day.
The road in was manageable, even in our rented minivan. It hadn’t rained in a while, so the conditions were dry - the ferns along the road were all coated in dust. We took it slow, navigated around a few potholes, and had no trouble crossing the shallow stream. Each unpaved stretch of the drive took about 20 minutes.
From the parking lot, it’s about a third of a mile hike to reach the canyon on a flat even surface. We wore sneakers and had no issues in the canyon—there were some muddy patches, but all easily avoidable. We didn’t complete the full loop; the most breathtaking scenery is within the first stretch, so we chose to double back and see it again from the opposite direction.
Fern Canyon ended up being my favorite stop on our 10-day Oregon Coast trip. If you’re in the area, I can’t recommend it enough—just be sure to get there early.
