It is located in central Colorado between Red Cliff and Leadville in the Eagle River Valley at an elevation of 9,238 feet. it was named for General Irving Hale. Onslow S. Rolfe, was selected to command Camp Hale.
Soldiers were trained in mountain climbing, and skiing, cold-weather. About 15,000 soldiers were trained here.
This is a self-guided driving tour with 10 stops that take you in a loop around Camp Hale. Each stop has an interpretive sign with history of that area. There is a larger interpretive site just off Highway 24 marked by stone pillars at the main entrance to Camp Hale about 17 miles south of the intersection of I-70 and Hwy 24.
