Exceeded our expectations and well worth the trek out from London!
Home of Charles Darwin - Down House的点评
点评:I have reread my mum's copy of Gwen Raverat's (Charles Darwin's granddaughter) excellent memoir of her childhood, partly set at Down House, so many times since I was a child that, coupled with being a science teacher, learning that we could visit Down meant that visiting on our next trip to the UK (we live in Vancouver, Canada) was mandatory! My husband indulged me and was impressed with how interesting it was and how much there was to do.
If you are staying in London like we were, do not be daunted by the seemingly complicated talk of getting here. We left Victoria station about 9:30 am, then an R 8 bus (which left from the bus depot right outside the train station in Orpington) and were dropped right outside the gates at Down House just before 11am.
The staff and volunteers were excellent. All were welcoming, helpful and informative. We started with a fantastic tour of the house from Kim, who was very knowledgeable, and able to pack in just the right level of information into the allotted hour.
