点评:Directions to the meet-up area/parking lot were clear and easy to follow. We had lunch on Main St. and it was a quick 3 minute drive to the site. We were met by Andrew (Andy) who was getting shovels and buckets out of storage for us to use. We parked and Andy was quick to explain the water temperature (really not as cold as I was expecting for March) and that although the creek was running high the day before, it had come down and there were some good spots that we could dig in. Andy made sure we were well equipped with boots (the $20 Walmart rubber boots worked out well) and once we were all changed, we were off down a small decline to the creek.
Andy walked us about 30 feet down the creek to a spot where he said others had found decent amounts of gold. He was quick to show us how to use the buckets and classifier (it separates the large rocks from the smaller stuff you want to run through the sluice. He filled the bucket with water and put the first shovel full of rocks and mud and showed us how to break up the mud and rocks. He explained how gold loves to be near quartz and pulled out several quartz samples, examined them for gold, and showed my son how to properly throw the rocks downstream, away from everyone else.
We were ready to start mining and Andy set up the sluice very close to our digging site which made for quick access to our sluice. Every question or comment we had was met with a quick answer or explanation followed by a personal experience to drive the point home. I cannot stress how AWESOME Andy was.
My 9-year old son enjoyed chatting and digging and Andy genuinely enjoyed his questions and chattiness. We were the only ones there (guessing March is a bit of an off-season for gold mining) and Andy was available to hang out with us all day and even helped shoves, carry buckets, and show us the proper way to sluice.
We had a wonderful time getting muddy and doing tough manual labor (yes, this is mining at its most basic, you WILL get dirty!) and after a few hours it was time to see what, if any, the payoff was. Andy is a master cleaner and slicer, he had our gold separated in a few quick minutes. It was like watching a magic show as he separated the larger pebbles from the black sand, gave the pan a few quick swirls and POOF! GOLD appeared! We got 15 pieces of gold, 1/2 a gram if we're lucky, but it was ours, we could see it, we could touch it, and we WORKED for it.
We are already planning our return trip and hoping to bring other families along, this was such an amazing experience for my son that he will never forget. We cannot wait to get back! Thank you so much Andy, I hope you get to read this, and I hope you get to be our guide next time we come out to mine.
