点评:Ape Cave is a fun novelty for Washington State. You start by making a reservation in advance for the day you would like to visit. Our time was at 11, but they let us in at 10:30. It seems they are somewhat relaxed on the timing of these reservations. There is a small charge for parking, but an America the Beautiful pass will also cover the parking fee. There is a small gift shop and ranger station along with restrooms before you go in. A short walk will get you to the entrance of the cave. We started with the upper cave, which isn't terribly difficult. Finding your footing is the main challenge as there are often boulder fields you have to navigate. There are a couple climbs/scrambles to be aware of that may be difficult if you are a heavier individual. Average or slim builds will do these parts with relative ease. It is chilly in the cave, but a light outer layer is really all you need. Don't wear heavy outerwear. This isn't exactly a beautiful cave like a Carlsbad, but it is a unique cave. It mostly looks like a hollowed out subway for most of the journey. You can go beyond the exit stairs, but the cave just ends. There's nothing really to see beyond the stairs. We had some time, so did the lower cave after. If you did the upper, I wouldn't really recommend the lower. It is pretty barren of the rocky features in the upper and felt to me like you were walking through an old coal mine or something given how barren and tubular it was. Overall, this was a trek worth doing. I'm not sure if I'd return, but glad I did it. There is a nice viewpoint of Mt St Helens if you make a right out of the parking lot and drive up about a mile.
