Ape Cave Lava Tubes的点评
点评：The Lava Tubes are really cool. You enter the cave through a set of steep and uneven stairs. Then if you take the "lower cave" hike, which is the easier one, there are about 3 "technical" spots where you have to take a bigger than average step down onto an uneven rock, or perhaps put a hand down on a rock to keep balance. The rest of the walk is on uneven ground, but with secure footing. I did the hike in running shoes and was fine. Light weight hiking boots would have be preferable, due to grippyness, but the running shoes were adequate.
My knees are a bit uncertain at times, and I used one hiking pole. I could have done the hike with 0, and 2 would have necessitated a head lamp, so 1 was the right number.
The cave is supposed to be about 42* F, but I was in leggings and shirt sleeves and was fine. A light sweatshirt or jacket might have been better, but I never thought to myself "I'm cold."
Bring at least two light sources per person, you want a backup in case the main one goes out. They sell headlamps in the gift shop (for about $35) and I believe rent flashlights for much less.
The walk is slightly down hill the whole way, which means slightly up hill the whole way back. The end is anti-climactic- the cave just sort of peters out, so if you feel like you've had enough, just turn around, no reason to go the whole way, you won't see anything different.
Take a moment in the cave to turn out all your flashlights and just BE in the darkness. It is a feeling we don't get much in today's society.
