点评:We booked a six hour private beginner climbing lesson. It was the most expensive activity on our 3 week vacation on the west coast, but we knew it would be a once in a lifetime activity. The location was (obviously) beautiful, climbing above the trees and looking across to see half dome is something I will never forget.
However, we were all disappointed with the quality of the instructing. Granted it is October and they are probably getting a little bored towards the end of the season. I don't want to call out the individual because maybe it was a one-off. However, I do want the school to know, so that they can improve their own training with regard to customer service. I'm sure the instructors are probably among the best climbers in the world, but their level of customer service leaves something to be desired.
I will list the main issues below:
- We were told to bring our own packed lunch. I then thought it was strange that in the middle of the lesson, the instructor left our location to go to a local cafe. I essentially paid for him to walk to a cafe, wait in a queue and walk back. It's only around 20 minutes but that seems not right when we were told to bring our own lunch.
- There was another lesson next to us (from the same school). The two instructors spent most of their time talking and complaining about their company pay, benefits and health insurance.
- For us beginners, climbing anything higher than 2 or 3 meters feels like a big deal. Obviously to the instructors it is not. So it was annoying when we were stuck or panicking on the rock, and the instructor was often not there to give reassurance or advice. They were often chatting to the other instructor (I remember being stuck and panicking, while the instructor was chatting with his friend about his burrito lunch. My friend had to practically shout to get the instructor's attention so he could help me). He would also often randomly leave to go somewhere round the corner for more than just a couple of minutes (maybe to go to the toilet?). Not a problem if he said when he was going and that he would only be a minute. I've been a ski instructor, and I would expect these climbing instructors to be 100% present and attentive, especially when clients feel out of their comfort zone.
Either way, I do not regret booking the class. But as the school has very little competition within the area, they may have little reason to show top quality customer service. Although because of this experience, we did not tip. We would happily have tipped if the instructing was acceptable.
