Epic Backpacking Trip Around Mt Rainier's Wonderland Trail going counterclockwise!
Wonderland Trail Description (Going Counterclockwise)
The Wonderland Trail is a 93-mile trail that circumnavigates Mt Rainier. Per the online trail description it is 93 miles (~149 kilometers) and has an elevation change of 22,000ft (6,706 meters) with virtually no flat sections of trail. We chose to plan our itinerary with our hike going counterclockwise around Mount Rainier as it looked like this could give be better for our knees by having some of the steeper sections as ascents instead of descents. We had multiple climbs that went on for miles (one was more than 6 miles straight!), we had to ford high rivers and creeks, and we endured a full day of rain that soaked us to the core. My brother John started to show beginning signs of hypothermia. Luckily for him having gone on numerous adventures with me over the years his body is quite used to this situation, LOL! I am so grateful that I got to have my brother John, my cousin Jason, and my good friend Heath with my for this epic adventure. All distances and elevations in the description and the video came from my Garmin Fenix 6. I will say that there were days where we went a little extra , the path was washed out, or we didn’t take the direct path. If you decide to complete the wonderland trail you should be prepared with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate and survive in mountainous backwoods conditions without expecting to rely on others. We did enjoy getting trail reports from people coming clockwise around the trail, but even those can be misleading. I have been on many adventures in my life and if you’ve been with me you know that there are times when other are turning back, saying there is no route, or “it will be impossible to cross” and I will typically go assess and analyze for myself only to discover that I find those assessments from others to be completely false for me and my group. We encountered a lot of “trail angels” during this trip giving advice, intel, and help. Only at one time on our last day did we receive horrible advice from what I deemed “Trail Devils” that led to extra milage going the wrong way over the boulder fields after we crossed Kautz Creek on some logs. Well, buckle up and get ready for a ride!
