点评:Free tours are offered Monday through Friday at 2:30 and 4. Our guide was retired from the foreign service and he was very knowledgeable, sharing a lot about Alaska’s unique political structure, including its new rank choice voting and the permanent fund, which comes from oil investments and awards every Alaskan, including children, with a check each fall. The most recent payout was $1700 per person. The building is very beautiful and it is filled with meaningful Alaskan artwork, which our guide explained. My favorite story was about the design for the Alaskan state flag. There was a competition in the 1920’s while Alaska was still a US territory that was won by 14-year old Benny Benson, who was of Swedish and Alaskan Aleut descent and raised in an orphanage. Benny’s design—featuring a blue field for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaskan flower; the dipper constellation; and the North Star—was unanimously selected and he was awarded $1,000. This tour is free and well worth the time!
