莫纳克亚山峰的点评
点评：Don't let the scare tactics keep you from driving to the Mauna Kea summit. While safety is always important, it's a completely manageable drive if you are confident and know what you are doing. The unpaved section is essentially a 4-mile stretch of standard gravel. You absolutely do not need to spend crazy amount of money on a tour company or rent a Jeep with 4-Low. As per the rules, you need any AWD/4WD vehicle, and as long as you have that, you are permitted to make the climb. I took a BMW 430i xDrive (sedan clearance) and made it without any single issues.
At the checkpoint, the ranger was surprisingly rude about letting me through, claiming I would smash my oil pan on the boulders up there and telling me I was "unreal" for attempting it. He basically promised I was in for a terrible night. Honestly, the tactics made me believe there might be some kind of 'arrangement' between the rangers and the tour/rental companies. There are no 'boulders', just typical gravel like you'd find on any unpaved road. Take it slow, and you'll be fine.
Coming down is easy. Shift into low gears (1st or 2nd) to let your engine do the braking, and just use your foot brake when needed. My brake temperature was 116°F when I finished the descent, which is pretty impressive.
Do spend 20 minutes at the Visitor Center to get acclimatized before the climb up. Bring jackets, beanies, scarves, and gloves to keep yourself warm. The warmer you are, the longer you can stand outside to actually enjoy the spectacular sunset.
