点评:A delightfully warm weekend in mid-March was perfect timing for reopening the Howard Buford Recreation Area to the public, an area that includes the beloved Mount Pisgah Arboretum (“a 209-acre nature education facility”) – which we enjoyed for several hours. Despite shocking sights from the January ice-storm damage still exposed, there were cleared trails (thanks to many volunteers & others) which allowed for leisurely strolls along the river, past the water garden, and into the woodlands.
Birds were busy gleaning insects, & we were thrilled to see high-spirited Bewick’s Wrens (with bold white eye stripes) flittering close to the ground to forage amid the scattered heaps of broken, lichen-coated branches. Higher up, we also spotted a little Ruby-crowned Kinglet (with a prominent eye ring) bustling through trees.
Springtime wildflowers also flourished among the shattered twigs & crumpled leaves. Tinged in Easter hues, the delicate blooms burst forth, embroidering the trails with dazzling white Fawn Lilies (dressed in recurved “cornette” hats), showy snow-white Trilliums, sunshine yellow Buttercups, lavender Camas, pink Toothworts, speckled Nemophila (also known as Baby Blue Eyes), & attractive clusters of miniature Daisies. Definitely enchanting to walk these wildly decorated pathways!
The only “butterfly” we saw was a lone, white-streaked, brunette-rimmed beauty (about 1 inch wingspan) which was flying low, then landed on the forest floor. But it wasn’t a butterfly. After photographing it, we later learned it was the lovely day-flying moth (Mesoleuca gratulata) – commonly known as the “Western White-ribboned Carpet Moth” or “Half-white Carpet Moth” – noted for bringing joy to those who see it, and considered to be “a sure sign of spring!”
Check the Arboretum’s Website & Facebook pages for more information – including upcoming festivals & events, native plant sales, member walks, Arboretum work parties, bird tours, & so much more! The Website also has trail descriptions, & online trail maps. Dogs on leash are allowed. Bathrooms are located at the entryway. Many plants are labeled, with the addition of educational exhibits, interpretive signs, benches, bridges, & fun interactive displays.
There is no admission fee to the Arboretum, but Lane County does require a parking pass for your vehicle ($5/day, or display of an annual pass). The Arboretum – open daily, dawn to dusk – is managed by the nonprofit “Friends of Mount Pisgah Arboretum,” and welcomes volunteers.
Of note is the upcoming Wildflower Festival (Sunday, May 19, 2024), and a call to volunteer artists to create an “Art in Nature” display (contact August Jackson, Interpretation Coordinator at the Arboretum). May should be a splendid time to visit, especially to view migrating songbirds & to see many wildflowers, bees, moths & butterflies! Enjoy the trails!
