点评:First of all, Amazing hike. Also, the hardest I have ever tried. I Hope this review to be useful. Let's Paint a picture here: I'm 44, quite fit, I practice Crossfit since 4 years ago, I have done many trekkings, but I'm not an Expert, meaning I don't go with any special Gear or gps, I like it just as a sport. Same my wife who is 2 years younger, also crossfitter. Services at Place: there is toilets, there are women selling snacks, accessories, tasty juices. There Is a restaurant that opens only during cruises periods. The start is the same Place as Titou gorge, another lovely activity although much much shorter. About the hike.... Guide or no guide. Well, the path to the boiling lake is just one, It Is in excellent conditon (meaning you can clearly see it). You see, dozens of people every day go through it so you will just see it for most part. The First half is quite difficult, lots of ups, some down, lots of stairs and some mud. By the way, you'll get muddy as for shoes and lower part of legs. If It rains it's probably worst, I went during a sunny perfect day. Anyway, after reaching the top view point at about half of the Trail there is a terrible descent to reach the Valley of desolation. I mean, sometimes you Need to go also down with arms, jumping down some steep or cliffs. Before getting to the Valley of Desolation, you must follow a path which Is also a River, but don't get comfy, because at some point the right path continues on the right side, leaving the river behind. If you don't see that you'll get lost. About that, the Valley Is very Wide open view. If you get Lost you can easily find the way back. So the descent was a real challenging part, very long and very steep. The First fumaroles appear and you have to stay clear of the Sand near the boiling water, there could be 'bubble spots' where your foot will sink in the boiling mud. No worries, very unlikely even without a guide you are able to see where not to put your feet. Don't be too curious, this things burn. After this part, another very tiring hike Is to get to the lake. The lake itself Is Amazing, It Is an unbelievable place on Earth. The way back Is the same and it's a Little bit easier cause you have a lot of hard climbing (and not descending) and finally the last part back Is all a mild descending to the starting point back. Time: if you're fast and constant, with about 10 stops for pictures and couple of minute breaks, It takes 3 hours. But beware: in this 3 hours you'll hike, climbing rock-stairs of 50/60 cm height and more, you'll cross rivers on few stones, you'll descent through some slippery rocks, mud, 70-80% angle slopes, there Is also couple spots with a helping rope. All in all: It's not a 3h normal hike. IT IS NO PICNIC. The guide are ridicolously overpriced in my opinion. We were in 6 people, 80€/$ EACH! So 480€/$ for a hike. Really too much. But, without it I probably would have given up somewhere near the Desolation Valley. Some point of the path look like impossible or very dangerous. And our guide mr. Green was helpful and very friendly, so yes I would recommend a guide, especially if you start early as First to climb up. But It Is not impossible to go alone, Just be careful and prepare the path in Advance. Also: 2 litres water each, snacks, banana, Energy bars are ideal. Go early, or the sun will scorch you, (although 3/4 of the hike Is in the Shadow of the forest). Total round 6 hours including a stop of 20 minutes to the lake.
And bring swimsuit... At the arrival back you will want a dip in the First access pool of the gorge to wash away mud and relax your poor legs. Enjoy!
