As per the legend, Guptakashi is associated with lord Shiva, Pandavas at time of end of Dwapar Yuga. After the Kurukshetra between Pandavas and Kauravas, the Pandavas were felt guilty of killing their cousins and elders. Lord Krishna had been advised to seek pardon from Shiva and worship. But Shiva did not willing to meet Pandava and to avoid meeting them at Kashi, Lord Shiva went to Guptakashi in Uttarakhand in the form of bull - Nandi. When Bhima tried to hold the bull by its tail and hind legs, Nandi vanished from Guptakashi into the ground. Then lord Shiva reappeared later in five different forms, namely hump at Kedarnath, Face at Rudranath, arms at Tunganath, Stomach at Madhyamaheshwar and the Hairs at Kalpeshwar. This five places are called the Pancha Kedar. The disappearing act of Lord Shiva gave the place name as Guptakashi means the hidden Kashi.
Interesting Facts about Guptakashi temple:
1. It is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya during his religious expeditions across India.
2. This temple is also famous for Ardhanarishvara temple a half man and half woman from of Shiva and Parvati, which is located left side to the main Vishwanath temple.
3. Infront of main temple there is Manikarnik Kund where two streams of water flowing. It is believed to be one stream is of River Ganga and another stream is of River Yamuna. The water level of this Kund always stays intact and it neither get overflowed or dry.
4. As per holy scriptures its a strong belief that by bathing in this Kund one can get prosperity in life. it's also a cure for many diseases which can be cured just by taking bath in this Kund. Devotees takes this water and performs Abhishek to Lord Vishwanath.
