点评:Sunday 8th February and we walked from the Cruise Terminal into the centre of Bridgetown, the Capital of Barbados. The walk in to the City was about 2.2 kilometres.
As it was Sunday virtually everything was closed so we took the opportunity to walk and visit the sights and points of interest that were available to see.
At the centre of the city is Heroes Square which is home to this iconic sculpture and monument which honours those who have helped shape Barbados through history. It portrays the journey of the Barbadian Family's from the past up to the present and pays tribute to it’s Heroes.
It shows how the people were shackled through slavery but that bondage was broke and the emergence of a free independent nation.
The monument pays homage to 11 National Heroes, each with their own tall metal stele, bearing their image and a brief resume about them.
They include Bussa, an African Slave who led the slave rebellion of 1816 in Barbados.
Others honoured included political figures such as Samuel Jackman Prescod the first non-white person elected to the Parliament. Also Sir Grantley Herbert Adams, who was the first Premier of Barbados. As well as Errol Walton Barrow , regarded as The "Father of Independence" and first Prime Minister.
Trade Unionist and Champions of workers rights are honoured including Charles Duncan O'Neal, Clement Osbourne Payne and Sir Frank Leslie Walcott. Also, Sir Hugh Worrell Springer, a former Governor-General and trade unionist.
A religious hero paid tribute to is Sarah Ann Gill, a religious pioneer who stood up for Methodist missionaries.
The sporting legend Sir Garfield St. Aubrun Sobers is also honoured. As well as the world famous pop star Rihanna (Robyn Rihanna Fenty)
The monument, it's symbolism and the honoured Heroes takes visitors through Barbados's painful journey through history. It acknowledges the role of Politicians, Trade Unionists, Religious Leaders, world famous cricket star and global pop icon and their role in shaping modern Barbados.
The words Inspired, Exulting and Free are carved in to three curved concrete pillars.
One of the metal plaques in the Square, sums it all up as follows:- "Monument Abstract - The Monument to The Barbadian Family is a representation of our journey as a people from past to present. The shackles of oppression pulled apart by the Ancestral Families of the past, show the breaking of the bondage of slavery. The Hero Steles populating the central area, speak to the emergence of our own National Heroes. At the centre, the statue of the Modern Family shows that the family has been at the nucleus ol our emergence as an independent nation and republic
