St. Louis Cathedral的点评
点评：The frame of this Roman Catholic cathedral (the chapel is situated in the downtown, scruffy area) is entirely metal.
As the region is exposed to the force of nature from a truly restless Earth it was designed to withstand cyclones, earthquakes and fire when built about 230 years ago.
The interior stained glass windows tell the story of the city, the life of St. Louis and evokes the Roman-Byzantine architecture.
If the stained glass told today’s story it would show around a hundred burnt out cars as citizens rioted in September 2024 at the huge cost of living rises and low quality of life tested against that of France. The damage to vehicles alone must top £5 million.
We are always drawn to find the statue of the Portuguese, Lisbon born, St Anthony of Padua (where he died from fungus poisoning at 35) as an Irish favourite saint as the Patron Saint of lost causes. If we had a league of saints in Ireland Anthony would be up there.
Oh how oft my mother ascribed ‘lost cause’ to the young me. She was right of course and now three score and ten later I still smile and as I reflect (which men do and women don’t) if this is what the lost causes get in life count me in.
The chapel was serene and the poverty around it noticeable.
