点评:This is an interesting site - but we did not feel it was a "must see" in its current state.
We got there in time for the 10:15 guided tour. We were told that the guide hadn't shown up for work that day (in a way that made us think that was a regular occurrence).
The price was $10 per person. They required cash.
There is a piece of paper listing the sites on the plantation. It was a bit hard to follow - a decent map would have helped.
The main plantation house - the site we most wanted to see - was closed. Apparently it has been closed since the storm in 2017. It sounds like they are waiting for FEMA to give them some money before they repair it.
There are a few plantation out buildings - a couple are open and have exhibits. The vast majority of exhibits focus on slavery and the history of some individuals who came to St Croix as slaves.
One of the buildings is a cookhouse. The self-guided piece of paper encouraged one to visit there and try some local food and tea. We entered the cookhouse and there was a good smell of baked goods. We dropped some hints, but the lady working in the cookhouse seemed very reluctant to give out samples. I'm not sure why. Eventually, we managed to get a small sample of bush tea. The food, however, she held on to.
All over St Croix one sees the ruins of small stone windmills that once powered the rollers used to crush sugar cane. At Whim Plantation, you can get close to one of these windmills in fairly good shape. That was a highlight for me.
Until the plantation house has been restored and opened to the public, I would classify this site as "if you have extra time" rather than "must see." Hopefully, at some point the plantation house will be restored, the tour guide will show up, they will accept credit card payments, they will have fuller information on a range of topics....and maybe you'll even get a food sample.
