点评:The opportunity to visit Kaarakin - and knowing we would see endangered black cockatoos in the wild - was a major reason we wanted to visit WA in the first place. These are special creatures for so many reasons. Seeing them in their natural habitat was enthralling, and learning about the struggle to protect/preserve the three WA species was moving and enriching. Sam and his crew are all-in, responding to crises and tirelessly advocating for these birds. He treated us to a personal tour of the centre and its expansive grounds, introducing us to the dingoes and emu who also call the facility their home. Residents have plenty of room, are curious and are encouraged to explore.
It is important to bear in mind that this is a conservation centre, so while there are plenty of opportunities for photography - and you can feed gumnuts to some of the birds - you are visiting because you are interested in learning about extremely vulnerable, endangered animals who have been traumatized/injured, etc. It's not a theme park or a carnival with souvenirs. You're going to be mesmerized and awestruck, but you're also going to be learning a lot about some crucial conservation initiatives. Time flew by while we were at Kaarakin, and we didn't want to leave our new friends. Thank you to Sam and everyone at Kaarakin for your dedication and perseverance. A highly recommended visit for curious bird lovers and wildlife conservation enthusiasts of all ages.
