点评:Gibraltar has many monuments scattered about its rather small area. One of the most poignant can be found at Europa Point at the south end of the territory, the General Sikorski Memorial. On the July 4, 1943 B-24 crashed off the coast near Gibraltar. Sixteen men were killed and only the pilot survived and was rescued. Among the dead was General Władysław Sikorski the Commander in Chief of the Polish Army and the Prime Minister of the Polish Government in Exile.
The present monument was constructed in 2013 replacing two earlier ones built in 1945 and 2003 respectively. These were located at the end of the runway on what was then the RAF airbase in Gibraltar and now its International Airport. That location was deemed unsuitable for allowing crowds to visit and a new location was found at Europa point.
The present memorial was constructed by a Polish firm and contains the propeller recovered from the B-24 that was used on the earlier memorials now places on a disk of sandstone imported from Poland.
Admission to the memorial is free and it is easily located. Most organised Gibraltar tours include a visit to Europa Point and the memorial battery is located between the Europa Point Lighthouse and Harding’s Battery a short walk from the car park. For those coming on their own the number two bus from the town stops nearby.
