Stunning short uphill hike into a grand amphitheatre of green mountains and glaciers

点评：We did this shortish, steep hike on a good path before our cruise ship left port (at 8pm so we had plenty of leeway!) Walked from the ship along the pavement for 20 mins or so then crossed and headed for the obvious car parking that services the hike.It was busy on a sunny, Saturday afternoon but there is overflow parking too.
The path ascends steadily and quite steeply (no difficulty, just the usual slog up a hill) and it was very busy with families and other hikers so we had no fear of bears etc.Just as well as we left the cruise area without bear bells or spray, we were in such a hurry to do this hike.
It got VERY hot near the top and tough going(we'd also managed not to bring any water) but we soon reached the highets point of the trail where truly magnificent views opened up.They were always good views behind us, the sea and the ship (and Whittier's location is stunning too) but seeing the BIG mountains, glaciers and a tantalising lake below was the thing.I think we were about an hour from leaving the ship to the highest point of the pass (we are mid/late 60s, used to hillwalking at home.) Around 40 mins from the car park area.
There were beautiful mountain flowers all around too in late June.
I wish we'd had time to walk down to the lake and we probably did but then you worry about an injury etc and the ship leaving! Spent about 30 mins just exploring this superb area, accessed so relatively quickly.Very lucky to see it in clear, sunny weather given the area's reputation for rain.
