点评:This romantic and overgrown ruin is in a beautiful spot with stunning views. Look out for the small signs for ‘historic church’ on the road, then climb steeply until you see St Bartholomew’s, the Castle can be found through the gate from the lower churchyard. There is a dirty info board which reads as follows:
**Before the Norman Conquest**
This ruined castle, thought to have been built in the 1050s, was named after Norman baron Richard le Scrope. He was one of a number of Normans granted land in the earldom of Hereford by Edward the Confessor.
Locals were not best pleased by the arrival of these Norman ‘foreigners’, but raids by the Welsh were increasing and it was vital to defend the border. The hill top castle gave commanding views of the main north-south routes and the road towards Worcestershire.
Little remains of the original castle, but it was probably a timber and earthwork structure that was subsequently rebuilt and modified in stone and mortar. You can still visualise the motte and bailey design from the ruins you see today. Look for the ruined stone keep on top of the tall motte, the adjacent bailey with remains of the stone curtain wall that once encircled it, and the deep outer moat.
**The Norman Borough**
A borough was created alongside the castle, including the magnificent church that remains today. In 1216 the borough was granted a charter for a weekly market and annual fair and continued to thrive for some years, with 103 burgesses in 1304.
It lost importance when it was bypassed by the transport routes that developed along the valley and Ludlow grew as a commercial centre.
