Lovely little place in tropical heat

点评：We got here by taxi on a weekday morning just before opening time (10am). It was nice to have the place to ourselves to look at the insect and coral exhibits, and touch the leaves of the Sensitive plant (all by the admissions section). The fee to enter the tropical house may sound steep, but do consider how much effort, time and cost it takes to run a place like this for everyone to enjoy and learn about butterflies, caterpillars and life cycles. If you can tolerate the humidity and heat, great, but you can exit and enter as many times as you wish. Once inside the tropical house, you can admire the different species of butterflies in your own time and pace. Coax a few onto your finger(s) or head by making use of the sugary water dips and take photos and videos. The cafe serves the usual cold drinks and sandwiches, and additional hot food choices (like jacket spuds with hot filling) are available from midday. There's a unisex toilet available too. If you want to eat outside there are picnic tables alongside the cafe building. If you're lucky you may hear and see the GWR steam train running along the Rheidol valley. We decided to go for a walk outside the area and back (~1hr because there was a dead end) - there's a stretch of brambles and native vegetation that had lots of native butterflies like Red admiral and Small white. We had plenty of time to get back to Aberystwyth via steam train from the Aberfyrdd station stop. If you do decide to return on this route, ensure about 30-40 mins to walk the trail via Rheidol reservoir and round the farmers fields. Check the timetable for departures.
