点评:If you book on a guided tour they'll carefully navigate you between the classic sites of the old town and everything looks pretty much like the post cards. The main sites looks great and are kept in pristine condition and are definitely worth seeing but they help paint over the real squalor Havanans live in.
By all means do a guided tour but its worth ditching the map and criscrossing the old town. Everywhere you look there are piles of putrefying rubbish mixed with rain water creating rancid puddles and streams, the smell of which permeates every corner of the old town. Locals searching through the rubbish for bits of food, huge queues outside the banks trying to access cash and shops with shelves full to the brim of just a single item as nothing else is available.
Every so often you'll find an absolute gem of a restaurant, bar or shop hidden between the houses. The locals are incredibly friendly and despite the state of the area it still feels very safe during the day. Its not what travel brochures show of Cuba but gives you a great sense as to how far Cuba has fallen in recent decades and how the people have to live.
