点评：Russian Bazaar, Ashgabat
One of my favourite ways to understand a place is to visit a local market.
Today I caught a taxi to what many people here call the Russian Bazaar (Gulustan Bazaar). It’s not a huge market by any means, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life in Ashgabat.
In one aisle I was admiring sacks of herbs and spices. Around the corner I found embroidered bags, traditional hats and local handicrafts. Then suddenly I was standing in a shop selling every phone case imaginable.
Old and new. Tradition and technology. Side by side.
A few people spoke English. Most didn’t.
As seems to happen in many places, I was more of a curiosity than anything else.
And honestly, I didn’t take many photographs.
Turkmenistan isn’t a place where I feel comfortable pointing a camera at everything. People generally value their privacy, and I’d rather miss a photo than make someone feel uncomfortable. So these images are simply small glimpses of a much bigger experience.
After a couple of hours wandering, I decided to walk the 6.5 kilometres back to my hotel. Thankfully, my trusty @maps.me app once again earned its place in my travel toolkit and guided me home the most efficient way possible.
The photos show herbs, spices, fish, fruit and market stalls.
What they don’t show is the smell of dried flowers, the conversations I couldn’t quite understand, the feeling of standing out as the only obvious tourist, or the simple joy of getting completely lost for a while.
Those are the parts I travel for.

有些人会说英语，但大多数人不会。
似乎在很多地方都是如此，我在这里更像是一个引人注目的人物。
说实话，我没拍多少照片。
在土库曼斯坦，我不太习惯随手拍照。人们通常都很重视隐私，我宁愿错过一张照片，也不愿让任何人感到不自在。所以这些照片只是更广阔体验中的一小部分。
漫步几个小时后，我决定步行6.5公里返回酒店。幸好，我信赖的@maps.me app再次发挥了旅行工具箱中的作用，为我指引了回家的最佳路线。
照片里有香草、香料、鱼、水果和市场摊位。
但它们没有展现的是干花的芬芳、我听不懂的对话、作为唯一一个显眼游客的尴尬感受，以及迷路片刻的纯粹乐趣。
这些才是旅行的意义所在。
