"Tahku" at The Whale Project. A fantastic, free, and educational stop in Juneau.

点评：My husband and I visited "Tahku" at the Whale Project last August, and it was a highlight of our trip to Juneau. We took the Capital Transit bus from our hotel and took the short, 10-minute walk from W. 9th Street to Overstreet Park (named after former Juneau mayor Bill Overstreet.) From there, the Juneau Seawalk boardwalk scenically connects the park to Egan Drive, the downtown business district, and the cruise port.
We arrived early in the morning before the tour buses, which allowed us to enjoy the peaceful park with only a few other visitors. The life-size bronze humpback whale, sculpted by R.T. Wallen to commemorate 50 years of Alaska statehood, is stunning. It sits in an infinity pool with a brilliant vantage point overlooking the Gastineau Channel and the Juneau-Douglas Bridge. We stayed long enough to watch the timed fountain activate twice—the sprays perfectly mimic a whale’s blowhole and breaching splashes!
The Whale Project opened to the public in 2016. It was made possible by many generous contributors and a small group of committed citizens. The park later added an infinity pool and synchronized waterwork in 2018. It is completely free and highly educational. We loved reading the signs along the infinity pool to learn about humpback whale life cycles. Along the Totem Pole Trail, visitors can view intricately carved poles and interpretive signs that honor the traditions of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples and their cultural contributions. A bronze plaque honors Kathryn Kolkhorst Ruddy, the founding chair and lead fundraiser of the Whale Project. I highly recommend visiting early in the day for the best views and a quiet experience!
