Guided tour is well worth it
Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary的点评
点评：The prison was active from 1896 to 2009 and is now only a museum. It is in a beautiful setting among the mountains. The first building that you come to has its own parking lot and contains a gift shop (mostly selling alcoholic beverages from the on-site distillery), the Warden’s Table BBQ restaurant, the ticket counter to check in for tours, and restrooms. The tours actually begin at the prison building up the driveway and you can drive up there and park close. I had reserved our tickets online several weeks ahead of time, $73.60 for two people.
Our guide was Larry (aka Grumpy), a former guard who worked at the prison for many years and seemed to really enjoy reminiscing and telling how things operated there. He told stories of fights, killings, and escape attempts, and also of moments when respect was shown. We toured the outdoor areas and the two oldest buildings. We saw the cell where James Earl Ray served his time for the assassination of Dr. King and learned about his escape and recapture. The museum is housed in its own building and contains artifacts from the guards and prisoners as well as a theatre showing a film of interviews of former prison employees. There is a separate building in the prison area with large restrooms so you can have a pit stop mid-tour without returning down the hill to the gift shop.
One guest on our tour got weak and dehydrated so we had to pause the tour for 30-45 minutes while he was attended to. Meanwhile the rest of us were able to move about the buildings and grounds as much as we wanted, then we came back together and Larry continued his tales. The tour was advertised for 9:30am-11:30am, but we ended up following Larry until almost 1:30pm. We were enjoying the tour so much we appreciated having the extra time.
