点评:I could not describe a more wonderful location and experience than with Sharon and her staff at the beautiful Andromeda Botanical Gardens. On our 1 day stop as a part of our cruise, my husband, an avid amateur "botanist" and lover of plants and gardening, and I chose to make the sometimes harrowing trek to Andromeda Gardens rather than to some of the more well known botanical gardens on the island. And we were glad we did.
Because our time was short, we planned our itinerary on the island far in advance as to not have any trip ups in our limited stay in Barbados. Communication with Sharon, the custodian and curator, was easy and helpful, and we opted to reserve the Curator's Tour to make the most of our stay and to reduce the stress of getting there and back. Though it may seem as if the BD$400+ for two people with transport may seem pricey, it was worth every penny.
Sharon arranged for a taxi to pick us up from the cruise port to transport us to the garden. Knowing we had another tour set up in town after the garden, she also set up for the same taxi to pick us up later and drop us there. Lunch from the on-site Eastside Kitchen was also included. Because we were coming on Ash Wednesday and we were not allowed to eat meat (fish was ok), Sharon made sure a viable option was made available. And let me tell you, it was one of the best meals we had on our entire trip! The barracuda was so delicious, the breadfruit and salad, tasty and refreshing, and the lemonade could have been bottled and sold for a fortune.
The care and love Sharon has for Iris Bannochie’s Gardens was quickly evident. Her spunky attitude was infectious as we strolled through the Gardens and her obvious knowledge shown brightly. She was so mindful of my husband's cane and the slippery paths, but quickly adjusted when we told her we had hiked more challenging trails in our world travels. She told us about the 70 year history of the Gardens, described her journey as caretaker, and showed us every flower, plant, bush, and tree while telling us extensively everything about all of them. She explained her wants to continue bringing more inclusivity by making improvements to accommodate those with both physical and mental disabilities along with including the community to help with creating these changes, gave an extensive and colorful history of interesting points to the garden like the origin of the bricks and walking stones on the paths, discussed students from Arizona State coming to build structures for garden improvement, creating a special area for milkweed and the many butterflies of the garden, and so much more. For a smaller 8 acre garden, there is so much packed in and so much more to come in its bright and beautiful future!
We cannot recommend going to Andromeda Botanical Gardens enough and we truly hope that we will be able to return in the future.
