Andromeda Botanic Gardens的点评
点评：Well where do l start? This is an incredible place! Situated on a hillside and providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape and Atlantic Ocean it’s a stunningly beautiful 8-acre organic garden in the village of Bathsheba, on the east coast of Barbados. Winding paths take you through different sections, each with its own planting section. Breathtaking!
It was created by horticulturalist Iris Bannoche in the 1950s, at a time when almost all of the land in Barbados was used for sugar cane production. She travelled far and wide in her search for many of the plants we see in Andromeda today. She even exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show in England! What a remarkable woman!
The current custodian of the garden is another, equally remarkable, woman called Sharon. We had the pleasure of a guided tour around the garden with her, taking in all the aspects, learning about the plants, their habitats, their uses and the ecosystem that supports them. It’s Sharon who has overseen the development of many aspects of the garden - she has secured funding, opened up access so that the garden embraces diversity/inclusion, local residents and schools are offered free access, there are tours, courses, arts programmes, a lovely cafe serving delicious foods, and as a result visitors have increased from 400 per year to over 40,000
You really must pay this place a visit. If you love gardens, love plants, love nature; if conservation is high on your agenda, visit Andromeda. You won’t be disappointed and you will be supporting the garden big time. Everyone who works here does so because they believe in what they do and want to make a difference.
