点评：I visited Bari Reef in 2011 and was completely blown away — it was vibrant, alive, and teeming with marine life. I’ve thought about that experience for over a decade. So when I returned in 2025, I was beyond excited to see it again… but what I found left me devastated.
The reef is now a shadow of what it once was. What used to be healthy and colorful is now largely bleached, broken, and lifeless. From what I’ve researched (on ChatGPT), only about 20–30% of the damage can be blamed on climate change. The rest, disturbingly, appears to be from poor sanitation practices, waste disposal, and runoff management. It’s heartbreaking to see such a beautiful natural resource neglected.
Every visitor pays a marine park fee, and I honestly expected those funds to be going toward real conservation efforts. I don’t say this lightly, but Bari Reef is no longer what it used to be — and unless serious changes are made, more of Bonaire’s reefs will follow the same path.
I truly hope the island takes this loss as a wake-up call. There’s still time to protect what remains and restore what’s been damaged. But this experience was nothing short of heartbreaking.
