点评：This is just one of several sculptures that you will see as you stroll along leafy North Terrace. It’s a nice place for a stroll.
Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland, stands prominently out the front of the State Library.
He gets around - there are 8 statues of Burns across Australia.
They were all erected between 1883 and 1935. At this time, there was something of a Scottish diaspora and large numbers of Scots were emigrating around the world,. Many were driven from their homeland by agricultural displacement and the Highland Clearances, but others came seeking enterprise and new opportunities.
National pride and a good dose of home-sickness caused them to erect statues of their much-loved Robert Burns wherever they went (there are 16 in the US, 9 in Canada and 4 in New Zealand).
This statue was unveiled in 1894 and was sculpted by William Maxwell.
Burns has a confident pose. He has one leg forward and holds his left hand in the air as if he is in the middle of speaking. In his pother hand, he holds a sheet of papers.
Right next to Burns, you’ll see the SA Museum and the Art Gallery of South Australia so there’s a lot to see in the immediate area.
