点评:I had high expectations for the Pitch Lake, often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World," but unfortunately, my experience was far from what I imagined.
1. Poor Signage and Difficult to Find
To begin with, locating the Pitch Lake was a challenge. There are no proper signs along the road leading to the site, which makes it incredibly frustrating for first-time visitors. A landmark as significant as this should have better directions and signage to guide tourists.
2. Misleading “Tour Guides” at the Entrance
Upon arrival, we were immediately approached by a group of men claiming to be official tour guides. They quoted us US$15 or TT$100 per person, along with a “mandatory tip” of TT$20 because, as one said, he had to “take something back to the office.” The tour lasted only about 15 minutes and felt rushed and uninformative. It was only after the fact that we realized the official tour costs just TT$30 per adult.
3. Lack of Transparency and Missed Opportunities
What’s worse is that there is an official Pitch Lake Tour and museum, but these so-called guides sit right at the entrance, giving the impression they’re affiliated with the site. Because of this, we completely missed out on the actual museum and all the rich history and scientific information it offers.
As a first-time visitor, I left feeling disappointed and cheated. It’s disheartening that such a globally unique natural wonder is poorly managed and allows scammers to operate so freely. I hope future changes can ensure a more transparent, informative, and safe experience for other visitors.
