点评:As a wildlife photographer, the Pantanal has been on my wildlife bucket list since I first wrote it. It was really important to me to experience as many animals and birds as I could, but not interfere with their natural behaviour. I contacted Julinho and the Pantanal Trackers team after seeing their website and reading about how he uses his knowledge of the animals in the Pantanal to inform his guiding.
I booked 6 days with Pantanal Trackers and never regretted a single minute.
Often, guides in other places will spook the animals to give photographs more action or get their clients closer for ‘better’ shots, but Julinho doesn’t do that. He’s a photographer himself and being brought up there, he knows the Pantanal exceptionally well. He has the uncanny knack of placing you in the right space at the right time to see the animal in its natural environment.
There are often other boats whizzing around full of people from hotels or cruises who only have a finite amount of time to see the jaguars or tick off animals from their lists, but Julinho takes his time working out where an animal will move to next and is often the first to get there. His local knowledge is phenomenal. How he saw, let alone identify, some of the animals at distance I will never know. He has the eyes of a savanna hawk.
As a single female traveller, I never felt pressured or unsafe. In fact, Julinho’s laid back personality and eclectic sense of humour only enhanced the experience.
Things to remember:
• Don’t disturb the animals.
• Don’t get frustrated if communication with the team is sporadic. There isn’t any internet in some of the out-of-the-way places and the team can’t get back to you immediately if they’re guiding.
• Always take a water bottle. It can get hot out there.
• Don’t take loads of photographic kit, lugging tripods and huge lenses around uneven ground and trying to balance them in boats is no fun and you could be missing the action.
• Do exactly as you’re told.
• Don’t wander off.
• Julinho may tell you he’s a pilot, once or twice.
