点评:Having got back to normal after our incredible trip to Zion National Park, I figure I can write a few words about our experience. Sorry, I may leave a lengthy review.
My wife and I are trying to hit areas of our Country that we’ve always wanted to see, but life got in the way. Now that we are a little older and still able to walk ok, we decided on a trip to the area of Zion National Park.
We arrived in Springdale on 8 Sept 2025 where we checked into our absolutely breathtaking Hotel, The Desert Pearl
( highly highly recommended that you book a stay here ) after a three day stay in Springdale and doing the normal Zion National Park activities, our fourth night we had booked a stay at Under Canvas Zion, which is right outside Springdale and another place highly recommended to stay, but book a Star Gazing Tent (Amazing )
That night, 11 Sept 2025 we had been in contact with the Weight Family Ranch who offers a horse back ride, both afternoon and evening rides. The Ranch is owned by Bill Wright, who is a 7th generation Rancher. Having a daughter who rodeos quite a bit, we are very familiar with the “ Royalty “ of the Professional Rodeo Circuit, The Wright Family. Their ranch nettles up to Zion and we figure that we would love to see Zion from Horse back in the evening, so we booked the ride. Again, not having a lot of information and just going off of their website , plus having checked with other businesses that offer a horseback ride, for us there was no other choice.
We were not disappointed, in fact it was the best ride we have ever taken.
From reserving the time to the end of the ride, it was fast, friendly. Actually when booking over the phone, you talk directly to either Bill or Meagan Wright. They are personable, very friendly and down to earth. After talking to Bill, my wife and I got the feeling that we just talked to an old Cowboy from yester year. Just a really good person.
Anyway, we showed up to our ride at the given coordinates, yes you read that right, coordinates. They had a pen or corral right along side their road with a sign that stated Wright Famiky Horseback riding. There wasn’t a building of home in sight just the holding pen.
After waiting for a few minutes, I see a small dust cloud down in a little valley and moments later this cowboy appears on horseback, leading six additional horses. As he approached the pen he begins speaking to the six of us waiting for the ride.
Immediately we my wife and I felt like we were stepping back in time, his slow drawal, his cowboy demeanor, I know I was actually meeting a real, not a Hollywood Cowboy or poser as my daughter would say. He was the real deal! He introduced himeself as Calvin Wright, a son to Bill
After signing some paper work and getting fitted for the horse, we were off. Of course my wife and I had about 1000 questions, but we just listened to Calvin , amazed. He reminded me of Curly from City Slickers. Just a Cowboy and his horse, a good moral compass. As we ride and listened, I began to become more and more jealous of Calvin and his life. Just a man and a horse working cattle and living on the land. He was everything I wanted to be growing up as a young boy, a real Cowboy.
The horse my wife was riding wanted to be up front with Calvin, so she was able to carry on a conversation with Calvin the entire time. This allowed me, (who really likes meeting new people and conversing, finding out where they come from ) time to ride and transport my mind. My imagination took over as we rode along the foothills of Zion, truly looking at what I guess would be one of the greatest and most beautiful places on this earth, as I said my imagination took me to the time when where there were very little people in this part of the Country, Pioneers crossing the Country on horseback or by wagon. I imagined the Native Americans watching from the Plateaus far above, wondering what these strange aliens were. I began to take in everything from the Birds, to the small breeze blowing through the sagebrush, listening to the horses walking and breathing, it truly was a magical moment in my lifetime. I was living a small sliver of my childhood dream.
Calvin took us along a vast open range of sage brush and some burned trees then along the rim of the Plateaus, after which I realized why we signed the paperwork. Lol
You have to have a lot of trust in your horse. As this ride was not for the faint of heart. Calvin made sure we had some stops for photgraphs,
At one stop, we were sitting atop of the Plateaus far above Under Canvas, where we were going to stay for the night, again magical.
On the back half of the ride I tried to be friendly and strike up a conversation with another rider, let’s say they were from somewhere on the West Coast. I was met with somewhat of a brick wall, not a friendly response. Taking the hint I maneuvered my horse to where my wife and Calvin were at and listened to their conversation. Again, amazed at the friendliness of Calvin and envious of the type of life he leads. Completely disconnected from all of the Negative going on recently. Like I said he was friendly, courteous and extremely knowledgeable of the land.
After taking numerous photos and videos of the ride, trying to soak in every moment and bank it in my memory bank, the ride was over.
Saddened, we reluctantly dismounted our horse. After the other two couples left, my wife and I stayed behind and were able to carry on more conversation with Calvin. He was gracious enough to take a selfie with us, we learned more insight to his family and I think I even asked him for a job for my daughter who loves this lifestyle as well. After some time of asking questions, we sadly departed ways. My wife and I watched as Calvin disappeared back into the valley. Following the dust cloud for a bit, we made our way back to Under Canvas.
A truly magnificent experience !!
I will forever remember our ride with Calvin and the horses covering a small sliver of the land sitting next to the foot of Zion, it was what I imagine Heaven will be like when I eventually take that Journey
I am not a fan of Progress, because we humans, at least most humans are not good stewards of the land and do not respect the beauty that has been given us. But for now we have good people like Calvin maintaining the canvas for the future. If his brothers and sisters are anything like him, that ranch is good hands.
Thank you so much Bill, Meagan and mostly Calvin for giving me a small part of my youth back and reawakening my imagination. Thank you for being good stewards to our Land and Country.
Don’t ever sell that land !!!
Dave and Jeannie
P. S.
This horseback ride was the best thing we did while on our vacation in Zion, probably the best thing we have done on any vacation. . And that’s saying a whole lot, Zion was an Incredible Journey. I will forever cherish my time riding Ruby.
