Visiting St Drostans Church in Markinch is a must if you're interested in History

点评：Markinch is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Fife and at the heart of it is "MacDuff's Church" -St Drostans - with its imposing Norman tower, perched on top of a hill, said to be the oldest building in Scotland in continuous use. St Drostans is about the half-way point on the Pilgrims Way from Culross to St, Andrews
There are an outstanding group of volunteers who are prepared, year round,to give you a free guided tour of the church and its grounds. They will show you the latest archaeological finds and the way the building has evolved from the early twelfth century to the present. The building is extremely well preserved and there are always new developments and ambitious plans for future use of the building
Our tour (19 of us) lasted about an hour and everyone was extremely impressed. Secret archways: stonemasons marks: archers grooves: fortified accommodation for visiting judges: different building techniques for various parts of the building: evidence of Reformation destruction: imaginative modern murals recreating interior aspects of the Tower; reuse of carvings from earlier eras and, in the grounds, a fitting monument to the 5 teenagers from Markinch who died in the Ibrox Disaster of 1971.
Tip: If you walk from the Church towards Stobs Cross (5 mins.away) you can enter the grounds of Balbirnie House and do a circular walk through the grounds -including Balbirnie House and the Stone Circle . It is a pleasant 1h.30 mins. stroll with signposts telling you that you are walking along the Pilgrims Way. If you go in May the rhododendrons are magnificent.Stop at the Golf Clubhouse and have a coffee.
