To Commemorate Christopher Columbus's (Colón) visit here in 1502 - impressive monument
Monumento de Cristobal Colon的点评
点评:Sunday 18th January we parked up along Avenida Cristóbal Colón and walked into resort of Meloneras.
Parking in Meloneras was a nightmare, so we drove out a bit and parked on the roadside where there was loads of free parking.
Walking towards the town we could see this monument from a way off. It is a feature that dominates the skyline of the region.
The bronze statue of Columbus stands on a square stone slab which rests on a globe and supported by a very tall fluted stone column, on an oblong shaped plinth. It all stands in roundabout surrounded by a plethora of tall cacti at the intersection of Avenida Touroperador Tui and very wide GC10 Avenida Cristóbal Colón.
It is not very practical or safe to get to the roundabout where the monument is, so best to take photographs from the safety of the pavement when approaching or walking around it.
The monument was erected in 2002 to commemorate the 5th centenary of Columbus (Colón) landing in Maspalomas in 1502. He stopped here to pick up supplies for his 4th voyage.
Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator during a period of extensive "new world" exploration. He undertook these voyages under the patronage of the Monarch's of Spain.
The statue depicts Christopher Columbus with his right hand resting on his chest while the left one is pointing west towards America.
There are some carvings on the base plinth with a nautical theme. There is also an inscription which records that on 24th May 1502, Columbus stopped in Maspalomas.
Despite our best efforts we have not been able to ascertain the height of the column with the statue on top, best to say it is tall.
Nearby on Calle Oceania there is a monument and plaque which marks the spot from where Columbus set sail from.
