点评:This is one of two lighthouses on the hill in Yamba. They sit very close to each other on the headland.
The Yamba Lighthouse is the one that catches your eye first. It’s the tall, rocket-like one, standing closest to the cliff’s edge.
The small, squat one which sits a little further back from the headland is the old Clarence River Lighthouse. It’s a replica of the original 1866 and 1879 lighthouses.
The Yamba Lighthouse was built in 1955 to replace the older lighthouse. It’s a relatively plain, tall, thin structure, standing at 18 metres high but it’s a distinctive feature of the Yamba coastline.
From the Pacific Hotel, it is only a very short walk along the road and a gentle slope up to the lighthouse. It is well worth the walk for the expansive views. In one direction, you look right down Main Beach and to the north, you have sweeping views over the Clarence River, Turner’s Beach and the break walls.
NOTE: For those with an interest in lighthouses, the very first ‘lighthouse’ can be seen outside the Yamba Museum. It is a pretty primitive affair - just a tall pole from which a kerosene lamp was hung.
