点评:This is one of two lighthouses on the hill in Yamba. There is some confusion in a few of the reviews and photos about which lighthouse is which. Even the main picture on the listing shows the wrong one. It’s understandable because they sit very close to each other.
The tall, rocket-like Yamba lighthouse is the most obvious one. It catches everyone’s eye first. However the Clarence River Lighthouse is the short, squat one which sits a little further back from the headland.
This is the original lighthouse although what you see here today is a replica of both the 1866 and the 1879 lighthouses.
The first lighthouse structure was a small wooden humpy built in 1866. It relied on a large kerosene lamp in the window and someone reliable to open the shutters each night.
Later, in 1879 this was replaced by the short, round lighthouse which was built by Colonial Architect, James Barnett. Designing lighthouses was big business for Barnett and he built 5 like this along the NSW coast.
The 1879 lighthouse continued to guide boats safely across the river's entrance bar until 1955.
It was automated in 1920 and no longer needed a lighthouse keeper.
Finally in 1955, it was replaced by the new and much taller lighthouse that you see over near the cliff’s edge.
NOTE: For those with an interest in lighthouses, the very first ‘lighthouse’ can be seen outside the Yamba Museum. It is a pretty primitive affair - just a tall pole from which a kerosene lamp was hung.
