点评:The distinctively round tower known as Torrione Rotundo is part of Loreto’s imposing fortress-like city walls.
The ancient defensive walls date back to at least the 14th century but in 1518 Pope Leo X was determined to make the city impregnable and beefed up defences, strengthening and reinforcing the walls and adding two towers and four bulwarks.
The Torrione Rotundo is one of the most obvious defensive features but its worth walking around the walls because you can still see all the typical features of Italian city walls.
In particular the Torrione di Porta Marina, at the other end of Loreto, has a guardhouse and until recently you could walk along the covered patrol walkways above the basilica’s apse (they didn’t seem to be open when we were there in June).
The Torrione Rotundo is located above the large Via Castelfidardo carpark.
It is easy to spot because in front of it, is a small grassy verge with an Air Force Frecce Tricolori jet mounted on display. The Madonna of Loreto is the patron saint of pilots and the Air Force. From here, you have sweeping views over the surrounding countryside.
