Impressive Former Orphanage and Hospital Featuring Stunning Murals by José Clemente Orozco

点评：Impressive structure that was completed in 1810 under the direction of the Bishop of Guadalajara, Juan Ruiz de Cabañas, and served as a workhouse, hospital, orphanage for the poor. It was one of the largest orphanages and hospital complexes in the Western Hemisphere and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After my visit to the Cathedral of Guadalajara, this was the next biggest highlight of my visit to Guadalajara. Once inside you can wander freely through the complex and there are several rooms displaying modern artwork from the past century by prominent Mexican artists. However, the highlight of a visit to the Museo Cabañas is to experience the monumental frescoes by Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco. Orozco was a contemporary of Diego Rivera and they were leaders in the movement known as Mexican Muralism in the early 20th century. The murals are politically themed and have a heavy focus on human suffering. Orozco was late in his life when he agreed to paint these murals and would only move forward if he was given the complete freedom to paint exactly what he wanted. When completed and first displayed, the murals were incredibly controversial and were met by widespread shock. They are dark and powerful but absolutely stunning and are considered the artist's masterpiece. There are tours offered hourly throughout the day, and this is a great way to appreciate what you are looking at. I recall English tours being offered every other hour but there is no schedule posted in advance, and you will not find out the times of the tours until you arrive at the museum.
