点评:The Valley of the Rocks is a rugged but beautiful U-shaped ravine formed during the Ice Age, some 120,000 - 200,000 years ago.
Starting from Lynton, we walked the 2.5km trail, along the South West Coastal Path to get here. The walk was one of the highlights of our time in Devon.
The valley is surrounded by steep cliffs and ancient, craggy rock formations.
It has an air of ancient mystery and the rock formations have enigmatic names like Rugged Jack, the Danes, the White Lady and, strangest of all, the Devil’s Cheese Ring.
Some of them are 350 - 4 million years old.
The largest formation is Castle Rock, which you can climb. There's a very steep, rocky path but I found it quite manageable and it’s relatively short. Near the top, is a large, rock natural platform with spectacular views of the coastline that make it all worthwhile.
After climbing Castle Rock, we walked through the rest of the valley, trying to identify the various rock formations.
One of the unusual things to look out for are the wild goats rock-hopping and stopping to grazing among the rocks. Apparently there have been goats here since the 11th century Domesday Book.
At the other end of the valley, we took the zig-zag path up Hollerday Hill which led us back to Lynton.
PRACTICAL TIPS:
* For those who have limited time or mobility, you can drive here.
* There’s a large paid-parking carpark. There is also a cafe and a public toilet block near the cricket pitch
