点评：We chose Letaka based on a recommendation and this trip certainly was all we wanted – actually exceeding our expectations. We did the 9 night safari from Kasane to Maun. There were some long days travelling between areas but this all added to the authentic safari experience. Driving through rather than flying in to selected hot spots gives a much better overall understanding of this wonderful region.
We began with a leopard and ended with a leopard. On the first day, as we were approaching Camp 1 in Savuti, we came across a leopard and two cubs – and, then, lurking in the background was a Brown Hyena (yes, a Brown Hyena!), hackles rising. Needless to say, with all this drama going on, we were late arriving at camp, but were given a warm welcome by the camp team. In total, we saw six leopards whilst on safari, finishing with a good view of a leopard in a tree on our way to the airstrip on the last day.
Alex was our guide, and what a magnificent guide he was, too. Through his tracking skills and dogged determination, we had some top-notch wildlife sightings. It was Alex, after 3½ hours’ driving following Wild Dog tracks, who discovered the pack asleep under a tree. We returned at 5 pm when they were still sleeping – but at 5.20 they began to rouse. It was playtime and exercise time before they set off for the evening, stopping to drink. It was a magical moment.
Alex’s Wild Dog tracking skills were repeated in Moremi. Guides in other vehicles had spotted tracks in the morning but had not been able to find the pack. In the afternoon, we went to the area and, with Alex concentrating on the tracks, and his two willing recruits scanning the bushes, we found them! We were in time to watch them frolicking around after their daytime sleep, then set off on a hunt – a thrilling experience!
We saw five cheetah and lions galore; we particularly enjoyed hearing all about the Northern Pride and the Marsh Pride in Savuti. But it wasn’t just the big cats that were a treat. We loved seeing all the other mammals and birds. Alex has an excellent knowledge of photography, so knew exactly where to position the vehicle to get the best photo angles.
Our safari experience was just what we wanted. Gone are the days when we would be happy to put up our two-man tent and cook over a small camping stove. The Letaka tents were exactly the right level of luxury for us. We were thoroughly spoiled by our camp team of Ludick, Scara and Poster. This team looked after us wonderfully and we always had a friendly welcoming homecoming every time we returned to camp. The food was first-class and it was fascinating to have a tour of the bush kitchen on the last day, to see where all the meals were produced. All in all, five-star luxury that would be difficult to match.
