Chateau De Crussol的点评
点评：Crussol castle is first mentioned in the tenth century but (core of) the present edifice was erected in the twelfth century by Gerold Bastet de Crussol.
During its time of glory between the twelfth and the fourteenth century the fortified town of Crussol houses about 600 people, with 300 more farmers outside.
Undefeated until the age of cannon Crussol is taken five timesbetween 1573 and 1578, during the wars of religion. The castle is set ablaze and the keep is destroyed. The town will be abandoned afterward.
There is a small museum with an interesting scale model at the entrance to the site but there are no information panels inside the fortified town. There is also no guidebook. I therefore warmly encourage visitors who want to know more about the history and layout of Crussol to enlist for an outstanding 90 minute guided tour which takes you from the town gate all the way up to the ruins of the castle (part of which tumbled down the rock in 1855 as a result of stone quarrying in the valley below).
Our guide – a lovely lady who had mastered in environmental law – proved very friendly, knowledgeable and open to questions. She also engaged the children in the audience in a fun way.
She pointed out the architectural details of various buildings along the way, explained the history of the town and the layout of the castle.
Crussol is very peaceful and offers beautiful vistas of the surrounding countryside and the river Rhone. Bring your camera because the site is very atmospheric.
The restaurant near the parking lot offers delicous food for an honest price and has very pleasant terrace.
