点评:What an incredible experience. If you are freaked out by butterflies, this is not for you. When they are active, you'll have hundreds of monarchs fluttering all around you, all over the sky, and probably a few landing on you. When it's too cold or dark and they are sleeping, it's incredible to see these 'shaggy' trees with thousands of them nesting side by side. There are so many it makes the tree limbs and trunks look like they have bags on them. When the temps get above about 15 degrees Celsius, they start becoming active.
I'd recommend planning to arrive in the morning before the temps are that warm. Then you can see the masses on the tree branches. As it warms, suddenly the air will come alive with them. It's just magical and totally silent.
It's all wonderful once you arrive, but it is a journey and then some to reach the nesting grounds. It's about a 3 hour drive from Mexico City if you are lucky. If you try it on public transport, plan to arrive the night before and stay in a nearby village. But reaching the entrance is only the beginning. From there, it's a further 2km hike with about 450 meters of elevation gain. Keep in mind the starting elevation at the welcome centre is about 2,900 meters above sea level! The first part of the path is smooth and even steps. Then it is a decent dirt trail, and then some uneven steps. Plenty of places to sit and rest, so it is very doable by most fitness levels if you take your time. If you don't want to walk, you can ride a horse up most of the way. You'll have to walk the final 200 meters or so uphill to the nesting grounds still. Either way, take plenty of water as there is none available once you leave the welcome centre.
Finally, take cash. When we went, it was cash only for the entry ticket and cafeteria onsite. There is a small village of food and souvenir vendors around the path leading from the parking lot, but I don't imagine any of them take credit cards, either.
