Parade Ground honoring a Mexican President

点评：We’ve left the Malecon now and stepped a short distance away to this bandstand, in the Plaza de Armes, or Parade Ground. It honors Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, [1911-1979], the President of Mexico between 1964-1970. The area is a place for political and cultural events. President Ordaz is remembered for the student protests of 1960, and a period of great economic growth for Mexico, during his administration called the Mexican Miracle. The plaque is written in Spanish but the text honors his roles and accomplishments. The Paper flags are called ‘papel picado’ and are put up in times of celebrations. The fragile tissue paper is demonstrative of the fragility of life, both the happy and the sad times. They stay in place until they are taken down for others or until destroyed by the weather. Our guide was explaining this to us.
