点评:From the moment we touched down at Dehli International Airport and saw a gentleman holding a sign with our name on it, we knew we had made the right decision! An English speaking fellow (whose name escapes me right now) took us to the car where we met the driver and we were presented with marigold flower necklaces. They smelled wonderful!
We have been lifelong travellers but have never used a tour company, until now….so glad we did.
We had previously been to India in 1978 as backpackers with limited resources but that country always held a special allure for us. A huge country with so many cultural, religious and geographical differences also makes it difficult to plan such a trip. After our initial call to Explore India (and many follow up ones) we booked Impressions of India which was a group tour beginning and ending in Delhi 14 days later.
We arrived a couple days ahead of the tour to get acclimated to the time zone. Raj, another fellow from Explore India met us the next morning at our hotel to make sure we were fine and see if there was anything else he could do for us. We wandered on our own that day close to the area around our hotel just to get a feel for the buzz.
The following morning we were introduced to our guide Mr. Shah who had just flown in the previous evening. Even though the tour wasn’t officially starting until the next day we were treated to a one on one tour around a few spots that weren’t included on the upcoming tour. We took a local bus, walked, jumped in a tuk-tuk, walked around the very lush Modi Park. Went to the site of Gandhi’s assassination, had lunch, and all the while we were getting acquainted. The last thing on my list was to do a bit of clothes shopping and even though Mr. Shah wasn’t too keen, he and my husband begrudgingly accompanied me.😂
The next morning we transferred to the hotel where we met the rest of our group (14 of us in all) and the tour began!
Our tour went from New Delhi to Jaipur, Ranthambhore (looking for tigers and saw one in the distance), Agra (Taj Mahal), Khajuraho (loads of temples and Kama Sutra erotic sculptures), Varanasi (to witness cremations and also people bathing in the Ganges River) and back to Delhi for the final goodbye to our group and also the wonderful Mr. Shah.
I have compressed this schedule so you’ll have to check it out on the Explore India website for the expanded version but it was 14 days long.
Modes of transportation ran the gamut of trains, planes, buses, rickshaws, boats, and tuk-tuks so it was never boring and there was ALWAYS something to see.
All of the accommodations included breakfast which were predictably good with lots of choices for all special requirements (I’m a vegetarian) and international cuisines.
We would have to say that what made this tour special besides the diversity of the country was absolutely due to our wonderful guide Mr. Shah. He was a wealth of information, very knowledgeable, easy to understand, friendly with us and everyone else he met, calm under pressure, charming and a good sense of humour. It would have been difficult to navigate all of us and our unique requirements but he managed to do all of that and more. Such a kind soul.
Some of our tour group were headed back to their homes, others were off to other locales and we embarked on the second phase of our trip which we also booked through Explore India.
This tour took us by train to Ajmer but more specifically Pushkar which is where a big camel and horse auction would be taking place over the course of 5 days. Although we were there a day prior to the start of it, we managed to see so so many camels, horses, international photographers and loads of tourists.
We were put in contact with a local guide (Bobby) who picked us up at the Westin Hotel Resort where we were booked for 3 nights. He escorted us around the town where we saw the only Brahma temple in the world. Took a ride in a camel cart (very bumpy); went to a textile cooperative and chose some gorgeous pashminas, etc; enjoyed masala chai as we surveyed the scene of camels and people while watching a magnificent sunset.
A perfect but unexpected day!
After our stay there we were picked up again for the drive to train station and our trip to Udaipur, dubbed ‘Venice of the East’. We were met at the station with a guide and driver and checked into the Trident Hotel, a very luxurious hotel with gorgeous grounds.
We intended to do a tour of the Palace with our guide but unfortunately the king passed away that evening and it was closed, so instead we wandered around the city and did a bit of shopping and had lunch.
The next stops were equally captivating and all different…Munnar which is the tea plantation region;
then Kumarakom Lake where we had a luncheon onboard one of the 2000 plus houseboats cruising around the massive lake. Some of them are live aboard but we stayed at the resort.
After 3 nights at Kumarakom we flew to the Maldives for a week of sun and sand and relaxation. It’s the only airport I’ve been to that has speedboats ready to whisk you away to the various resorts scattered on the islands. We were at Villa Nautica where we were spoiled and indulged at every turn. We chose a beachfront room as opposed to one of the rooms on stilts. I’m a non-swimmer and would rather walk on the beach, which we did daily.
The last and final stop of this epic trip was in the famous Mumbai, which is a beautiful city.
We stayed at the elegant Taj Mahal Mumbai. What a place!
One of the women in the concierge department organized an e-carriage ride around the city, high tea and a historical tour of the property.
They must’ve really liked us because all of these things were complimentary.
And finally, back to the airport and back to reality!
Did we love it?
YES!!!
Should you consider Explore India for your next exciting adventure?
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
In fact, we are now considering another trip to another part of this wonderful world with Explore India.
接下来的几个站点同样迷人,而且各不相同……Munnar 是茶园地区;
