点评:The Calakmul ruins were amazing! We accessed the ruins by car, driving from Xpujil along the highway until we reached the turn off, approximately 40mins west from town. The highway to this turn off was in moderate- good condition. They are currently upgrading the highway in multiple locations so at several locations you have to stop and are directed when to continue by construction people, overall this was efficient and didn’t an affect our journey time.
At the turn off you are asked to buy a ticket per person to the biosphere (you will have to buy a second ticket per person at the entrance of the archaeological zone). Cost of this ticket for two adults was $295 pesos. The road from here passes the Maya Train station which is still in construction. The road from here until the archaeological zone is newly paved and in great condition, no pot holes. You drive at 60km per hour but be careful as at times local traffic drives at a faster speed.
You drive about 20km before coming to the Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueología de Calakmul which is currently closed as they complete some construction works. Here you’ll be stopped and asked to show your wristbands you got at the turn off the highway, and they’ll take your vehicle registration (we assumed from a safely/ count perspective). From here on you are expected to drive 30km per hour but be warned as again local traffic drives at much higher speeds and can at times be dangerous, stay alert. About 10km away from the archaeological zone they are building a large hotel, to be used following the completion of the Maya Train, it has become less hectic and busy as noted in 2024 reviews but it is still an ongoing construction site.
The total journey from Xpujil to the start of the archaeological zone car park took us approximately 2.5hrs but that was with some stops by road traffic, so this may increase in time for others.
The car park at the archaeological zone is new and has plenty of space, we arrived at 10:30 and was quite empty. Here you’ll will have to buy entry into the archaeological zone, it costs $100 pesos per person. There are detailed information signs here (in Spanish, English and a third language) as well as a small museum/ info area. There are also new bathrooms here.
The ruins were absolutely stunning and there are loads of great articles online on the archaeology of this site. While there we were able to climb all the structures, this included the three tallest pyramids in the complex (Structure 1, Structure 2, and Structure 7). We expect that in the near future these to be closed off for climbing as tourist numbers increase and there are safety and conservation risks, as is the case in many other archaeological zones in the Yucatan.
We highly recommend going to this site prior to the completion of the Maya train and the hotel as that will begin to change the mood and character of the site.
