点评:The Morrin Center is a leading English-language cultural center in Quebec… and a former dismal prison, Quebec Common Gaol (1812-1867). We have seen the cold gloomy cells unprotected from weather conditions, learned about the prisoners…some of them were 7-12 years old kids incarcerated for a week or two for minor offenses and homeless women with children, who didn’t mind to go to prison to have guaranteed food and roof over their heads. In 1867 the Gaol was closed and the prisoners were transferred to the new prison.
It was a good move for the city because Dr.Joseph Morrin, former mayor and prominent Quebec City doctor, opened a college for English speaking students named after him: the Morrin College. This college is associated with prestigious McGill University in Montreal.
Since 1824, Morrin Center houses Literary and Historical Society of Quebec and is recognized as National Historic Site of Canada.
The most fascinating attraction is its library built in Victorian style. It is home to thousands of books and is a functioning library now.
Our guide, Jennifer, was excellent and we learned very interesting facts about the history of the city, unbeknownst to us despite our two previous visits.
